on the job/off hours

Having worked in design since 1983, and having run my own freelance business since 1987, I've come to realize that you don't just turn it on and off. A designer is blessed (or cursed) with the mission of observing how things are presented visually, and then figuring out ways to do it better.

Some of the best training and inspiration come in the off-hours: in studying photos of ancestors, in listening to my kids' ideas on current events, in reading a book. (Check out my reading list under the Diversions link above.) So, don't be dismayed by the steady mix of personal and business on this site. It all hangs together, really.

Here goes:

BA, with honors, UM (History of Art)

1 year spent in the Art Department — loving too many different areas of art and design (a very nice springboard to graphic design)

A background in black and white photo processing

A passion for information, clarity, color, typography, and computers.

A variety of awards:

  • Ann Arbor Ad Club Addys, in silver and gold varieties
  • The Music Publishers' Association Paul Revere Awards for Graphic Excellence
  • The Society for Technical Communication awards

what I do

Well, I do it all here. In fact, this is one advantage to choosing a freelance designer for your communications project: one person handles everything for you. (Of course, this is only an advantage if that one person is capable.) You don't need to pay several people to attend meetings with you, and you don't have to pay these people to relay information gleaned during the meeting to other staff members. In short, the project is streamlined because one person is handling all the details.

Some of the details:

  • I will meet with you to help determine your objectives
  • I will provide a writeup of objectives and project plans, with an estimate of project costs
  • I will develop ideas and visuals for meeting the objectives
  • I will work closely with you to refine the ideas and visuals
  • I will provide proofs for you in the best possible way: either as email attachments or pdf proofs, or fax proofs, or detailed layouts or mockups
  • I will manage and meet deadlines
  • I will work closely with final production vendors (photographic, print or web) to make sure the final product is of excellent quality and matches specifications
  • I will manage and archive all files so that the work can be easily retrieved in the future.
